Stanford’s Current Policy on Visitors to Campus
Please note the following regarding the status of visiting the physical Stanford campus: In response to COVID-19 and in accordance with guidelines from federal, state and county agencies, all of the Visitor Center’s on-campus (in-person) tours, information sessions and programs remain suspended for the foreseeable future until further notice; the Visitor Center and Office of Undergraduate Admission locations remain closed as well.
The Materials Science and Engineering administrative offices are located in the Durand Building. However, since we are a working office with active faculty/labs, we are not open for drop-in visitors. Please understand that we can not stop our research activities for every inquiry we receive.

Public Transportation from SFO:
BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) operates rapid rail service directly between SFO and northern San Mateo County. The SFO BART Station is on the Departure/Ticketing Level of the International Terminal (Boarding Area G side). BART is easily accessed from any terminal by riding SFO’s AirTrain to the Garage G/BART Station stop. Take the BART to Millbrae Station and transfer to Caltrain Commuter Rail southbound and get off at Palo Alto Station. Caltrain serves communities on the Peninsula and South Bay, with service between San Francisco and Gilroy. Weekday express trains operate between Millbrae and Palo Alto during commute hours. Depending on your hotel location, you may walk or take a free shuttle to your hotel from the Palo Alto Caltrain Station.

Parking is available across the street in the parking structure at Panama Street and Via Ortega. In addition, there are multiple parking ticket kiosks in the Tressider Union lot that take coins, paper money and credit cards.
From the station, follow Palm Drive into the center of campus, with downtown Palo Alto behind you. Alternatively, there is a free shuttle service (the Marguerite) from the Caltrain station to the center of campus (P - line). By train, Palo Alto is roughly one hour south of San Francisco, and 30 minutes north of San Jose.
