David Barnett wins the 2018 Drucker Medal
David Barnett, professor emeritus of materials science and engineering and of mechanical engineering, was recently named a recipient of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) 2018 Drucker Medal for his fundamental contributions to the field of applied mechanics and mechanical engineering. Established in 1997, the Drucker Medal recognizes excellence in research, teaching and service to the community and is named to honor the late Daniel Drucker, an outstanding engineering professor at Brown University and later dean of engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Barnett’s research focused on dislocations and waves in anisotropic elastic and piezoelectric media. His work, much of which involved collaboration with the late Norwegian physicist Jens Lothe, led to a better understanding of defects such as dislocations and of surface and interfacial waves in solids, and included the development of the so-called integral formalism to aid in the solution of problems in anisotropic elasticity. He is the author of 125 archival journal articles.
Drucker Medal awardees receive an honorarium and bronze medal for their accomplishments. Barnett will be honored at the ASME annual awards presentation in Pittsburgh in November.
