MSE DEI Statement

The Materials Science and Engineering Department promotes an inclusive learning environment with equal opportunities for students, post-docs, and faculty welcoming a diverse community of different backgrounds, race, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, and national origin. We believe collaboration is the key to innovation in the advancement of science as ideas are shared across multidisciplinary and multicultural platforms as each person’s unique skills and abilities are considered valuable contributions. MSE stands behind these values, intolerant of systemic biases, inequities, or social injustices. We continue to embrace ethical principles of respect, integrity, and fairness because Black Lives Matter.

It is our collective duty to educate ourselves about the historical and current inequities that cause some groups to be underrepresented and undervalued in the scientific community. We are actively working to break down socioeconomic barriers to reach talented individuals and help disadvantaged students succeed. The Materials Science and Engineering Department is implementing department-wide programming on diversity and equity, improving mentorship networks, and allocating resources to empower marginalized community members.

The Materials Science and Engineering DEI Task Force represents students, post-docs, faculty, and staff in a joint effort to strengthen an inclusive departmental culture. All initiatives maintain a supportive learning environment, equitable hiring practices, and accessible admissions applications. Anyone can take action for positive change by subscribing to the MSE DEI Task Force Listserv.
